WBJEE 2021 on July 11: Students and teachers skeptical about the delay

The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has indeed affected all walks of lives and something that seems to have suffered a lot, is the education sector. Students have had a hard time keeping up with online classes while teachers have had to rely on technology for everything they do. Those who had their boards in 2020 found themselves all over the place due to the extreme delay in the exams, thereby causing a delay in the results, and eventually, drastically affecting the admissions to further studies as well.

And now, as has been announced already, the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board will be conducting the WBJEE 2021 on July 11. This in turn, has left the students rather shocked because such a delay in the examinations for the engineering students also means that the current academic year will be vastly affected. As reported by The Times of India ePaper, many teachers have highlighted how this is the first time in over a decade that the said exams are going to take place at such a delayed date.

Teachers and professors feel the delay might lead to a loss

One of the teachers at Jadavpur University, mentioned to the leading portal how much like the way the JEE (Mains) are going to be held twice, the state could have also considered the same. The teacher added further how this would allow the candidates to pick a time which is convenient to them and therefore, might also help them to ease out a little. Another teacher at the engineering department of JU mentioned how everything is going to ultimately affect the counselling sessions, which take place in multiple rounds. He highlighted how everything starting from the exams is connected to what follows, therefore, those students who have written for other examinations will consider colleges outside Bengal if their results come in earlier, which is the loss of students holding merit.

WBJEE has considered other entrance exam dates

WBJEE chairperson, Malayendu Saha, issued a clarification regarding the dates as well and mentioned how these dates have been decided only after considering the dates that have been decided for other national entrance tests and this looked like the best available option after all. In addition, sources also told the leading daily that the option to conduct these exams online was passed on as given the digital divide, it did not seem very possible. However, the option has not been completely ruled out.

Online exams being considered for WBJEE 2021

Meanwhile, another senior official spoke to the leading daily and mentioned how delaying the admission of students is not going to solve the problem that lies in the form of seat vacancies. The official added how given that in all probabilities, the situation with regards to the pandemic is going to remain the same, not many students are going to opt in to go to colleges outside the state and take classes online. Another official at WBJEE also mentioned how seats were empty even when the examinations were held in 2020. However, he did not answer the question regarding why couldn’t these exams be conducted on multiple occasions, much like the so many other entrance exams.
