Don’t Be Too Broad (or Too Narrow)

You don’t want your field to be too wide, but there’s no point in limiting yourself to just one celebrity or historical figure, either — this can be difficult and cause you to lose interest.

If there’s a particular person you’re interested in, perhaps focus on collecting autographs from both that person and other related figures.

For example, if you’re excited to build an autograph collection for Winston Churchill, you might expand to other political leaders from the first half of the 20th century. Marilyn Monroe? You could widen your search to film stars from that era.

Think Before You Buy

There are a few key things to consider when collecting autographs, and they all impact the value of the item.

Of course, authenticity is vital. If it’s fake, what’s the point?

Then, you want the signature itself to be in good condition, while signed letters and photographs tend to be more valuable than just simple autographs.

Rarer signatures — there are just six William Shakespeare signatures in circulation — are all the more valuable, while the bigger the name, the more valuable the autograph will be. This is particularly true when the figure is dead, like Churchill, Monroe, and Shakespeare.

Is there a celebrity who was recently seen but usually stays out of the public eye? An autograph from them is likely to be more valuable too.

Keep in mind the data of the autograph too. A figure’s first and last autographs tend to be more valuable, as do autographs from the time period the person is best known for. Using Churchill as an example again, autographs from the Second World War are likely to be more valuable.

Be Respectful and Don’t Get Your Hopes Up

Of course, this applies more to obtaining autographs from celebrities who are still living, so depending on your focus this may not be quite so important.

If you’re asking a celebrity for an autograph in person or writing a letter to their address, make sure that you do some research on them. Mention one of their biggest movies or their winning goal.

If you’re writing them, make their life easier by sending over a self-addressed stamp and a letter along with your request, and even a pen too.

However, celebrities have busy lives and you won’t always get a response. Don’t be too disheartened if this happens — move on to the next!

Take Care of Your Collection

Keep your autographs in great condition, whether that’s to keep the resale value or just for your own enjoyment.

Large photo albums are a great place to store most autographs, like celebrity autograph cards, while heavy frames are best if you want them on display. Ensure that the autograph isn’t exposed to too much light or heat, or is touching the glass.
