CBSE Physics: How to Prepare for the Class 12th Physics Exam?

For students of class 12th Science, Physics is one of the most important subjects. It holds importance not only for board exams but also for several competitive exams.

The NCERT Textbook provides a base for the students to study for the Physics Boards exam. It contains all the chapters. However, additional material such as reference books or other resources may be required to prepare for competitive exams.

Physics can be a challenging subject for some students. The theory is relatively easy, but students may face some difficulties when it comes to solving complex problems. With a few tips and tricks, and a little hard work, they can score better marks in Physics. They need to know the complete syllabus, weightage of the marks, and the question paper pattern.

Firstly, it is important to make a note of all the topics with the highest weightage of marks so that you can concentrate on them more.

The final Physics board paper is for 100 marks, where 70 marks are for theory and 30 marks are for the practical exam conducted by the school.

The chapter-wise allotment of marks is given below –

  • Unit 1 and 2: Electrostatics and Current Electricity – 16 marks
  • Unit 3 and 4: Magnetic Effects of Electric Current and Magnetism and Electromagnetic
  • Induction and Alternating Current – 17 marks
  • Unit 5 and 6: Electromagnetic waves and Optics – 18 marks
  • Unit 7 and 8: Dual Nature of Radiation and Atomic and Nuclei – 12 marks
  • Unit 9: Electronic Devices – 7 marks

Every unit has two to three chapters each. The total weightage of that particular unit gets divided into chapters.

Tips to Follow to Prepare for Physics Boards Exam

  • Prioritize the Important Chapters: The chapters such as Semiconductors, Ray Optics, Wave Optics and Electricity have more weightage compared to others. Make it a point to study these chapters thoroughly and then proceed with the remaining ones.
  • NCERT Textbook: NCERT textbook is completely sufficient for studying Physics. It has all the concepts covered and there is no need to go through additional materials or reference books. The students also get an Exemplar Textbook which has problems based on the application of the topics. If you want to challenge yourself with advanced-level questions, try solving this book. This can also help you clear the doubts you have on any topic. To get the answers to the question at the end of the chapter, refer to Physics class 12 NCERT solutions.
  • Solve Question Papers: After your preparation for the Physics exam, make it a point to solve 2-3 previous year question papers to understand the level of questions and the question paper pattern. The last section of the Physics paper is solely based on application-based problems. This section has 7 questions of 5 marks each, out of which you have to answer any 5 questions to secure 25 marks from this section. The board ensures to test your ability on mathematical concepts based on Physics formulae.
  • Write What You Learn: Physics is all about formulae, their derivation, and the application of the concepts or topics. Instead of simply mugging up or memorizing all the concepts, it is recommended for students to write the derivation of the formulae. Also, while solving the sums, be sure to mention the given data and the formula being used. Writing the given data and the formula used in the problem also holds some marks. On a sheet of paper, write all the formulae from each chapter. This can help you with last-minute revision, before going into the examination hall.
  • Draw Neat Diagrams: In many chapters in Physics, there are several diagrams. For example, the ray optics chapter consists of ray diagrams. The electricity or electrostatics chapter consists of parallel or series connections with the application of capacitors diagrams. In the Physics exam, if derivation questions are asked, you may have to draw diagrams or connections. So, whenever you are learning the derivations, verify the diagrams and learn them accordingly.
  • Write According To The Marks: Sometimes, students do not write adequate answers according to the marks. For example, for a 5-mark question, they may write a three or four line answer or forget to include a diagram, according to the requirement. They may end up losing marks because of this. Hence, write descriptive answers to avoid losing any marks. Avoid writing the same sentence twice, to make your answer long. Write relevant and effective answers with a neat and well-labelled diagram.
  • Challenge Yourself: To assess your level of preparation, download a previous year’s question paper online. Put a timer for 3 hours and start solving the paper. This way, you will learn to manage the time and you can analyze your performance and spot your weaknesses to work on later.

  • Avoid Silly Mistakes: Many students forget the formulae or mix them up. In the Physics exam, they tend to mix up the formula used for finding the series resistance with the parallel resistance or vice-versa. Sometimes, they do not read the question completely. There are many derivations in Physics, which students can mix up sometimes. For example, in ray optics, they tend to jumble up the lens formula with the mirror formula. Hence, it is important to read all the questions completely and after the paper is complete, students should revise their answers.

Physics is a tricky subject. It needs a lot of practice to score well. Students should prepare well and focus on the subject. Learn all the formulas and their derivation completely. Solve as many questions as possible. With this, you can surely score well in Physics.
