Details of the Ballon d’Or winners(ballon dor winners), first presented in 1956, are given here. Most visitors to this page are looking for the FIFA player of the year’s results. The Ballon d’Or award is now a separate award, the two awards to create the FIFA Ballon d’Or were combined only from 2009 until 2015. The first women’s Ballon d’Or award (called a Ballon d’Or Féminin) was given in 2018.

The award was often named the European Footballer of the Year award until 1995, as it was only available to European players at European clubs. In 1995, the eligibility rules were changed to require non-European players to be eligible for the award if they were playing for a European club. Then any player in the world became eligible for this in 2007.
The award merged with the FIFA player of the year award after 2009. France Football announced in 2016 that they had ended their partnership with FIFA and that they would restore the Ballon d’Or competition, the 2016 edition became the 61st award.
The Ballon d’Or award was won six times by Lionel Messi, and five times by Cristiano Ronaldo.
